Lightweight Design Choices for LED-like Block Ciphers
نویسندگان
چکیده
Serial matrices are a preferred choice for building diffusion layers of lightweight block ciphers as one just needs to implement the last row of such a matrix. In this work we analyze a new class of serial matrices which are the lightest possible 4 × 4 serial matrix that can be used to build diffusion layers. With this new matrix we show that block ciphers like LED can be implemented with a reduced area in hardware designs, though it has to be cycled for more iterations. Further, we suggest the usage of an alternative S-box to the standard S-box used in LED with similar cryptographic robustness, albeit having lesser area footprint. Finally, we combine these ideas in an end-end FPGA based prototype of LED. We show that with these optimizations, there is a reduction of 16% in area footprint of one round implementation of LED.

متن کاملExploring Energy Efficiency of Lightweight Block Ciphers
In the last few years, the field of lightweight cryptography has seen an influx in the number of block ciphers and hash functions being proposed. One of the metrics that define a good lightweight design is the energy consumed per unit operation of the algorithm. For block ciphers, this operation is the encryption of one plaintext. By studying the energy consumption model of a CMOS gate, we arri...
متن کاملA Survey of Cryptanalytic Attacks on Lightweight Block Ciphers
Lightweight block ciphers are used in applications where low power consumption is a requirement along with hardware area constraints regarding their implementation. Design of these ciphers demands an optimal tradeoff between computational efficiency and security. These ciphers being supportive in fast and secure transmission of data from one location to another are prone to several attacks that...
متن کاملSecond Lightweight Cryptography Status Report
The design of lightweight block ciphers has been a very active research topic over the last years. However, the lack of comparative source codes generally makes it hard to evaluate the extent to which different ciphers actually reach their low-cost goals, on different platforms. This paper reports on an initiative aimed to partially relax this issue. First, we implemented 11 block ciphers on an...

Ubiquitous and pervasive computing are new era of computing and it needs lightweight cryptographic algorithms for security. Lightweight cryptography is used for resource constrained devices (which have limited memory, limited power and less processing capability) such as radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, contactless smart cards, wireless sensor network, health care devices and interne...
